A Treasured Quilt Returned
Patients in long-term care facilities are often allowed only a few personal belongings, so the ones they have matter a great deal. Recently, we had an experience that showed us the impact even a little care can have on those who need it most.
Our team was contacted after a patient’s personal quilt went missing at a long-term care facility we serve. We suspected the quilt may have accidentally ended up in the facility’s linen collection system and made its way to HLS.
Our Customer Service team shared the news with our Quality Assurance and Operations team, and they began searching for the missing quilt, which had indeed ended up at our facility. Finding a personal item among the large volumes of linen we process each day can be challenging; thankfully, the team’s efforts paid off, and the family confirmed the quilt was reunited with the patient that very same day it was found.
One family member, who works as a nurse at an acute care hospital, told us she worried the quilt wouldn’t be found. She explained that she often warns her patients and families not to put personal belongings in hospital linen baskets because she believes they are unlikely to be recovered. She admitted that she was shocked when it was a different outcome this time. In fact, the patient had already accepted that the quilt may be gone for good. After hearing the good news, she wrote: “But you proved me wrong. Thank you so much for your help.”
Hearing how much the quilt’s return meant to the family made this a particularly rewarding experience for everyone involved. The family expressed that the experience had exceeded their expectations. They appreciated how quickly our team responded and how promptly the quilt was returned once it was found.
Sometimes, it’s not about the thousands of kilograms of linen we process. It’s about one quilt, one patient, and making someone’s day a little brighter.
